Shays / Camelots at Cruisin' Hines
August 23, 2026
Flood check: Event is ON (as of 2026-08-11, 4:45 P.M)
The Cruisin' Hines event is a once-per year classic car event in the area of Detroit, Michigan. This event is held on the Edward Hines Drive, a parkway along the Rouge River which has no businesses or residences along it. For that reason, it can be closed to general traffic, and for this event, only "classic cars" are allowed to enter. So... then... EVERYTHING at this event, every car, is a "classic car". Okay, what does "classic car" mean? Well, the Shay and Camelot cars count, as do vintage muscle cars, hot rods, and any car, in this case, 25 years or more in age.
Many enthusiasts, this one included, think the Hines Cruise is better than the much-ballyhooed Woodward Dream Cruise, as it is "classic cars only", unlike the WDC. Not that WDC isn't a great event; it is. But if you're a classic car guy, you shouldn't miss this. Here's a link to a photo gallery of past years, showing the kinds of things you might expect to show up, and thousands of them... THOUSANDS of them, 40,000 cars, according to the Motorcities National Heritage organization, will be there. If you don't arrive in a "classic car", you'll have to park off Hines Drive, or in one of the designated parking areas, and walk into the event. Here's an article from VisitDetroit.com about the event, and a Wikipedia page to tell you about Hines Drive, with a mention of the Cruisin' Hines event.
So here's what you need to know:
- Date: August 23, 2026, from 9:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.
- Location: Hines Drive, Westland and Dearborn Heights, Michigan
- Website: www.CruisinHines.com.
- Entrance fee: $5.00 cash per vehicle; no charge for spectators / individuals. Exact change, if possible.
- Length of route: About a dozen miles each way; the full length of Hines Drive.
- Entrance: Hines Drive at Ford Road. Here's a map, it's the east end of the route.
Some peculiarities:
Hines Drive is actually a flood valley for the Rouge River. That's why there are no homes or businesses along it. As such, it's prone to flooding. Check the Cruisin' Hines site or the notice at the top of this page before leaving for the event. If it's been heavily raining in the Detroit area, Hines may be flooded, and the event cancelled. There is no rain day. If it's a bust, it's a bust.
Meetup site:
I suggest that Shay / Camelot owners gather at
1:00 P.M. at the Nankin Mills location. The GPS
coordinates of this location are
42.34836331, -83.37027811. There is a large grassy
area to the east (right) of this building, where cars
can be parked together.
